Experience has demonstrated that although there are benefits there are also significant challenges in running MDT meetings.  Lessons that have been learnt from practical experience for establishing and running MDT meetings are explained.  Additionally, there are templates and background literature provided as a resource for anyone seeking to improve palliative care services through such meetings.

This report examines local experience in introducing MDT meetings. The paper includes: what existed prior to this trial; what were the barriers to implementation; what techniques were trialled to encourage participation: and, how the meetings were adapted to sustain this practice in a rural community setting.

Pilot site implementation, participant experiences, challenges and outcomes of involving medical case specialists in rural palliative care are all considered in this paper.  Additionally, there are tips for implementing pertinent multidisciplinary teams and educational programs, establishing a palliative care medical specialist approach and ensuring that it is sustainable.  Experience from other projects is considered as are the benefits to the community.
