Managing Alcohol and Mental Health Comorbidity in Primary Care:

A National Workshop


Your Mental Health and Alcohol: Managing the Mix was formally launched by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Christopher Pyne on 23 November 2004. The launch took place in Adelaide, and was followed by a national workshop exploring comorbid alcohol misuse and mental health problems.

The workshop featured presentations and discussion forums from experts in the mental health and substance misuse field. The audience included GPs, project officers from Managing the Mix demonstration Divisions, allied health professionals, and alcohol and drug workers.

The workshop aimed to:

  • Provide an overview of the current policy context for and interface between primary care, drug and alcohol and mental health initiatives
  • Showcase existing resources available to general practice to assist with the identification, management and treatment of alcohol problems and common mental  health comorbidities
  • Examine the challenges and opportunities for enhancing capacity in general practice to respond more effectively to these problems
  • Recommend practical and systemic ways of enhancing capacity in general practice to respond more effectively to these problems
  • Showcase a series of national and local case studies and their good practice features.

The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation was the principal funding body of Managing the Mix. Funding was also received from the Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing and the Department of Veterans' Affairs. The national workshop was funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Managing Alcohol and Mental Health Comorbidity in Primary Care: Divisions' Orientation Workshop

The orientation workshop took place the following day, 24 November 2004. The orientation was aimed primarily at the Divisions of General Practice being funded under Managing the Mix. The presentations provide an overview of the principal aspects of the project, with presentations and discussions on relevant policy initiatives, reporting requirements and ADGP's role in supporting Divisions, consumer and carer resources, evaluation, and the education and training package.

The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation provided funding for the orientation workshop.
