New Zealand Modelling.

An examination of the experience in New Zealand and elsewhere provides insights into the possibilities in Australia but it will be essential that a new Australian ERM process be developed that will be effective within the Australian context. While experience elsewhere cannot be used to draw direct conclusions, it seems possible to make the following deductions:

  • The ERM programme will change the face of primary health care in Australia
  • Improved health outcomes can be made for DoHA and more health care delivered to the Australian communities with the same health resource.

Conclusion

There is confidence from the participating parties who have already committed finances to achieve this stage that the ERM programme will be self-resourcing after a start up period, and from the Phoenix Health Group who believe that the New Zealand experience may inform better practice in Australia. The ERM group believes that our modelling of this approach provides adequate evidence to indicate that there are opportunities for significant improvements in healthcare in Australia that deserve immediate attention.
