Benefits
There are a series of benefits that are at the heart of the ERM program.
The principal focus of ERM is the continuous quality improvement of the care provided by general practice and best use of available health care resources. The Australian community will benefit through better medical practice that is driven by the structured ERM quality processes. These benefits will include:
- A greater sensitivity to quality issues in clinical decision making;
- An acceptance of the need to base clinical decision making on sound evidence [where it exists], and in the context of precious health resources;
- A willingness to peer review clinical behaviour; and,
- An acceptance that individual information regarding clinical behaviour should be monitored and evaluated by peers.
The development of a sense of collegiality and collaboration between general practitioners and their teams, and other primary care colleagues is an expected and positive outcome. There will be the building of a strong sense of identity and belonging as a strategy along with a new collective accountability within the general practitioner community. ERM will strengthen the contribution and value of general practice in the wider health system. Additionally, the participants in ERM will exhibit responsibility to the wider community for improved health outcomes.
From a broader community perspective, there will be an enhanced ability and confidence of the general practice and divisions to develop new relationships, not only between members and with other primary care providers, but over time also with the community and in secondary care relationships.
