What is an Advanced Care Directive (ACD)?
An Advanced Care Directive (ACD) is a written statement which outlines your wishes for future health and personal care.  It is enacted upon once you are unable to make decisions for yourself.

Are ACDs legally binding?
In Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory, ACDs are legally binding documents.  Although not legally binding in NSW, Tasmania and Western Australia, ACDs may still be valid under common (judge made) law in these States.  Although not legally binding in some states, if the content of the ACD is consistent, current and up-to-date, then medical professionals are encouraged to respect the wishes stipulated in the document.
