Immunisation
The National General Practice Immunisation Program hosted by AGPN aims to improve the quality and levels of vaccination services provided by general practice, with the overall goal of improving immunisation rates across Australia.
The major focus of the immunisation program is to support and encourage participation of general practitioners in the General Practice Immunisation Incentive (GPII) scheme as part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP). The overall aim of the NIP and GPII is to achieve and maintain fully immunised coverage rates of 90% or higher in children under seven years of age.
The GPII scheme is one of the Immunise Australia initiatives announced in 1997 as part of a Seven Point Plan to lift immunisation coverage rates in Australia and to reduce the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases. Another initiative with this aim is the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (the ACIR). ACIR is a national register administered by Medicare Australia that records details of vaccinations given to children under seven years of age who live in Australia. It was established in 1996 in response to a decline in childhood immunisation in Australia and an increase in preventable childhood diseases.
