CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

Infrastructure

The Divisions focus is on the effective and accountable management of the financial, physical and human  resources of the Division.  The development of clear communication processes between the Division and its  members, and other levels of the health system and the community is a priority.

Workforce Forum

Medical workforce issues have a high priority both within the Division and local communities.  The establishment of  a Workforce Forum, with representatives of key stakeholder organisations working with local communities, has  provided an opportunity to develop an inter-sectoral response to medical recruitment and retention issues in small  rural communities.

Continuing Medical Education

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) program offers a local needs based program for members of the Division.

Practice Management Support

Two levels of support are offered  individual support to practices in identified areas of need and a practice  managers support network.

Peer and family support networks

This activity is designed to encourage communities to develop a social support network for GPs and their families,  including long term, temporary or locum arrangements.

Immunisation

The success of the childhood immunisation program, initially funded through the Commonwealth, has been  recognised by the South Australian Department of Human Services, Immunisation Coordination Unit (SAICU),  which has offered funding to continue this program of support to general practice beyond December 2000.  This  continuing funding will assist to maintain and increase the current level of childhood immunisation coverage (86% in  June 2000) to the goal of 90%.  There will also be a focus on adult and Aboriginal immunisation programs.

Childhood Continence

This program has achieved consistent results since it was first funded as a project in April 1997. Referrals are  accepted from GPs for both enuresis and encopresis programs.

Diabetes

This program of activity is a collaborative undertaking with the Regional Health Service.  The region has committed  additional allied health resources to the Diabetes Program to enable an annual inter-disciplinary review of General  Practitioner-identified patients with diabetes.  The Division is also a partner with the Murray Mallee Community  Health Service in the Nunga Care Diabetes program funded by a Primary Health Care Initiative Grant.

Mental Health

This program facilitates improved linkages between GPs and other mental health workers. Case conferencing  between GPs and other mental health workers was established under the project system and is continuing to useAged Care Network  the Enhanced Primary Care item numbers.
