The Murray Mallee General Practice Network (formerly the Murray Mallee Division of General Practice) is based in the Rural City of Murray Bridge. It has a small staff of administrative and program personnel. Only the Executive Officer is employed on a full time basis. The Division is based in a rural area with sheep, cereals, dairying and horticulture being the main farming activities. The marginal areas in the dry northern part of the region are used for cropping, and higher rainfall areas in the south are sown to pasture. Swamps along the River Murray flood plains and land adjacent to the lakes are used for dairying. The River Murray is the major topographical feature of the region and is a source of water for the State and a focus for recreation and tourism. The main road and rail links between Adelaide and Victoria pass through the region. The Divisions Mission Statement is General practitioners, working together and with other levels of the health system to achieve improved health outcomes for the community.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
- The Hills Mallee Southern Interdivisional Network brings together key stakeholders from four Divisions, the Regional Health Service, Primary Health Care Network and Consumers on a bi-monthly basis to develop collaborative approaches to identified health issues.
- The Medical Workforce Forum, which brings together key stakeholders to support practices and communities with medical workforce issues.
- The establishment of the Regional Diabetes Service. The Regional Health Service has committed additional resources to work with General Practice to provide inter-disciplinary diabetes review clinics as an extension of existing services.
- Incorporation of an Aboriginal focus in both the Diabetes and Immunisation programs.
- The development of a process for the provision of academic support for the Division through the ACES Consortium of the University of Adelaide Department of General Practice and the South Australian Centre for Rural and Remote Health.
CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE
The challenge for the Division in the next 12 months will be to demonstrate improved health outcomes for the community as a result of resources expended. Academic support from the tertiary General Practice education sector will be invaluable in this process.
