“BSDGP sees its core role as supporting GPs and general practice, and helping them link with other health care providers, where the care is patient focused and integrated to support the patient journey throughout the health care system”.

The Brisbane South Division of General Practice (BSDGP) is dedicated to improving the capacity and resilience of general practice to efficiently respond to clinical, commercial and community changes and to assist general practice to raise its professional standing and profile in both the local community and entire health sector.

The number of GPs practicing within the Divisional Boundary fluctuates between 350 – 370 GPs. These GPs work out of 97 practices, approximately 75% of which have fewer than 3 Full Time Equivalent GPs.

The population of the Division’s geographical area consists of people of a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, with migrants making up just over 25% of the population. This cultural diversity is reflected in the GP workforce with 21% of GPs coming from non English speaking backgrounds. The Divisional average GP/population ratio is 1:690.

There are four public and five private hospitals located within or near the Divisional geographic boundaries. There are also community health, adult mental health and child and youth mental health facilities located within the Divisional area.

A considerable number of privately practicing medical specialists and allied health professionals are also located in the area. Private radiology and pathology services and domiciliary nursing services are also readily available for Division GPs and their patients.

DELIVERING A QUALITY SERVICE

The Division continues to lobby stakeholders to provide sustainable program funding that in turn provides programs and resources that continue to build general practice capacity. The Division has worked with practices to support their ideas of an integrated primary health care model.

The National Primary Care Collaboratives has been a major funding source that has provided on the ground resources to practices who have wanted to work on diabetes and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. To build on this team based approach occurring in practices, the BSDGP has successfully implemented a Nursing in General Practice initiative that includes mentoring support for nurses.

Another initiative currently being explored is the development of an education program for practice nurses that supports the enhanced role of nurses to work with GPs to develop mini chronic care clinics.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Some of the major achievements over the past 12 months include:

Development of the Practice Audit Tool with Gold Coast Division of General Practice.
  • The production of a Refugee Health and Immunisation Book, that is a hand held record that has demographic information, including interpreter needs of the patient.
  • The highly successful involvement in the National Primary Care Collaboratives Program focusing on Diabetes and CHD.
  • Further funding for a local collaborative (first local Collaboratives in Qld) focusing on immunisation.
  • The enthusiastic uptake of the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care Initiative. The Division has supported access to psychology services for GPs by employing / contracting psychologists.

And much more….

FUTURE PRIORITIES

It is an exciting time of transition and rebuilding here within the BSDGP. This change is being led by a new CEO (beginning 2006) and a young and enthusiastic staff. Working within a new frame work and directed by a very supportive outward looking member base the future looks very bright indeed.

The Division is looking at new and innovative ways to deliver key programs and education in a forever changing environment limited by Government funding.

This involves a “thinking out of the square” approach that will provide even better linkages with even more stakeholders across health and business.

It will address:

  • How we promote and deliver services to our member base and ultimately our community.
  • How the Division can attract increased funding from a wider variety of possible funding bodies.
  • How we provide education to our members, utilizing the resources around us.
  • How we deliver our message to other organizations across the country - an innovative and effective organization leading the way in the delivery of supported integrated primary healthcare.
