With the theme "Focussed on the Future" the national Divisions of General Practice Network Forum for 2003 will focus on future directions in general practice and primary care in Australia, including supporting and building capacity in general practice, partnerships between Divisions, general practices and State health systems, delivering and measuring quality in primary care and building relationships with the community, business and industry.
There will be a number of opportunities in concurrent sessions for Divisions to discuss and debate the key issues in primary care delivery and what will be the role and function of the Divisions Network in Australia's health system in the future. A number of sessions will include Divisional paper presentations on their current and future work in key program areas.
The Divisions Showcase Poster Display provides a further opportunity for all Divisions to highlight the range of outstanding work and successful programs they have undertaken. The Poster Display can accommodate up to 100 posters, and the Steering Committee encourages every Division to consider submitting a poster to the Forum. In particular, the Committee would like to encourage submissions in one or more of the following areas, in line with key activities of the Divisions Network throughout Australia with a focus on the integration of primary care through general practice:
- After Hours Primary Care
- Aged Care/Quality Use of Medicines
- Child and Youth Health
- Chronic Disease Management/Information Management
- Immunisation
- Nursing in General Practice
- Primary Mental Health Care
- Workforce
The Trade Exhibition and Poster Display will be held in the 5,000m2 Exhibition Hall 1 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. It will include a range of industry trade stands, interactive displays and the popular Internet Cafe. The dedicated exhibition space will also serve as the main delegate area for meal breaks and out-of-session networking.
A special Poster Presentations session has been set aside on Saturday 22 November from 3-4pm. Posters will be grouped under the main subject themes above, and presenters will have the opportunity during the session to discuss their featured programs/projects with colleagues who have undertaken work in similar areas, and take questions from other delegates.
Posters are an integral part of the Forum. They should be designed so they can:
- be available for unattended viewing; and
- have attended viewing at allocated times, especially during the designated Poster Presentations session.
Posters allow a large amount of information to be transferred in a limited amount of time, and the Poster Presentations session will provide the opportunity for more in-depth exchanges with interested Forum delegates. Posters should be self-explanatory so that the presenter can provide further information and discuss particular points raised by viewers.
It may also be useful to provide copies of a 'summary sheet' or handout of the poster's content, including contact details for the presenter/s that is available for delegates to take with them.

Original sketch
- plan your poster early
- centre your attention on a few key points
- try different styles of data presentation to achieve clarity and simplicity
- does the use of colour help?
- what needs to be expressed in words?
- draft headlines and text topics
Rough layout
enlarge your best initial sketch, keeping the dimensions in proportion to the final poster - ideally the rough layout should be full size
a blackboard is a convenient place to work
print the title and headlines and indicate text by horizontal lines
draw rough graphs and tables
this stage provides ideas for proportion and balance
Final layout
- the artwork is completed
- the text and tables are typed but not necessarily enlarged to full size
- is the message clear?
- do the important points stand out?
- is there a balance between words and illustrations?
- is there spatial balance?
- is the pathway through the poster clear?
|
Balance
- figures and tables should cover slightly more than 50% of the poster area
- if you have only a few illustrations, make them large
- do not omit text, but keep it brief
- the poster should be understandable without oral explanation
Typography
- avoid abbreviations, acronyms and jargon
- use a consistent style throughout
- bear in mind that illustrations will be viewed from distances of one metre or more and lettering should be at least 13mm and preferably in bold type
- use brief captions
Movement
- the movement (pathway) of the eye over the poster should be natural (down the columns and along the rows)
- size attracts attention and arrows, hands, numbers and letters can help clarify sequence
Simplicity
- the temptation to overload the poster should be avoided
- more material may mean less communication!
- Ask yourself, what do I want the viewer to remember?
|
- all posters must have a title and author(s)
- poster boards are 2350mm wide, 1135mm deep and 1960mm tall (download diagram) with velcro-compatible background
- materials can be pinned or velcroed to the boards
- posters should be prepared in advance and brought in person by the author(s)
- the name of the author(s) organisation and city should be indicated
- poster boards will be positioned throughout Exhibition Hall 1 (download floor plan)
- requests for power, tables and brochure holders will be considered. The cost for these items are listed in the attached application form
- poster viewing will be available at the Welcome Reception, during meal breaks and in the special Poster Presentations session (see schedule below).
Please remember to bring all materials required for assembling your poster/s (pins, velcro, tape, etc.), as the organisers are unable to supply these on the day.
