MindMatters Plus General Practice Initiative
 Search:
Divisions of General Practice and ADGP

Divisions of General Practice have been funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing since 1992. They are local organisations that aim to unite GPs and increase their capacity to work cooperatively with other health providers and the community. Their purpose is to improve the health of populations through ensuring the delivery of effective health services in their local area.

There are currently 119 Divisions of General Practice, and about 94% of GPs are members of a local Division.

ADGP is the national peak body of the Divisions of General Practice Network. More information about ADGP is available at https://www.adgp.com.au/
.

Why are Divisions of General Practice and ADGP involved in MindMatters Plus GP?

GPs, who are supported by Divisions:

  • see a high proportion of the population and are well linked to the families of young people and services supporting young people
  • are well placed to participate in initiatives that focus on promoting resilience and attending to risk factors
  • have a mental health capacity that has been progressively built up across the Divisions Network.

Divisions of General Practice are:

  • a key part of local health infrastructure and act as a conduit between general practice and other services in the community such as allied health providers
  • well placed to participate in strategies that promote mental health and prevent mental health problems.

ADGP's involvement:

  • ensured the implementation of MindMatters Plus GP within a national framework
  • promoted linkages with other primary mental health care developments funded by the Federal Government to support general practice.
