CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

The Division is noted for a number of successful programs within the area. Amongst these are:

The Koori program

This important program operates in conjunction with the VAHS and other indigenous health organisations. It has been successful in improving coordination of services and the upskilling of local GPs to deal with the cultural and special health needs of Kooris.

Maternal and Child Health

In conjunction with local Government, the Division has promoted regular liaison between GPs and other services to improve paediatric and maternal and child health services, especially in the culturally diverse and growing suburbs in the north of the catchment. This comprises a number of upskilling, liaison and research activities.

Mental health

This important issue is being addressed by comprehensive training and liaison activities involving local GPs and mental health services.

Service planning and hospital liaison

The Division continues to promote strong links between providers. In particular, it is active in promoting the use of Information Technology (IT) through the electronic connectivity project being trialed in the north between Council, the public and private hospitals and GPs. It has also been instrumental in setting up the Northcote GP network based at the Darebin Community Health Service.

Refugees and recent arrivals

The Division is an active participant in a local coalition to improve the availability of culturally appropriate services for these groups.

Research and Advocacy

The Division is a major advocate on issues associated with the health needs of the north and continues to support the compilation of health research to support additional resources in the area.
