Capricornia Division of General Practice

The Southern Division of General Practice (SDGP) is committed to improving the health of the population through supporting the role of GPs in primary health care. The Division aims to do this through programs which emphasize education and upskilling of GPs, integration of General Practice into the wider health system and assisting GPs to provide better services at the practice level.

The Division's mission is to strengthen General Practice in the Southern region of Adelaide by enhancing the role of GPs in the planning and provision of primary health services in order to improve patient care and well-being. Reaching the large membership (there are more GPs in the Southern Division than any other Division in the State) and involving them in programs continues to be a challenge. The Division's area is not homogenous: it consists of a metropolitan, outer metro and a rural segment, each with a different socio-economic profile. This often requires modifications to the programs to suit the area of delivery.

The Division places much emphasis on one-to-one assistance to GPs and practices, delivering services by way of its Practice Liaison ProgramLargely through cross representation on policy making committees, strong links have been developed with consumers, community groups, hospitals (both public and private), and a number of the major health agencies in the area.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

High on the list is the wide range of different services to GPs and practices, and the number of GPs which the Division has been able to involve in its activities. Partnerships have been developed with all key health organisations in the area including community and consumer groups.

CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE

The major challenges ahead of the Division relate to the management of data, controlling the expectations placed on the Division by other health care providers and, with limited resources, its ability to serve a very large membership and population. The combined urban and rural demography also creates a challenge in terms of equity and access for both GPs and their patients.
