WentWest Limited was established in 2002. Until early 2006 its primary role was as the Regional Training Provider of the Australian General Practice Training Program (AGPTP). The region covers the area extending from Sydney Olympic Park to Katoomba, and north from the Prospect Reservoir to Windsor and Richmond and we prepare medical practitioners for the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners examination.
In February 2006 WentWest Limited gained the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing Division of General Practice Program contract for the Auburn, Blacktown, Holroyd and Parramatta local government areas of Sydney.
WentWest Limited now has two branches:
GENERAL PRACTICE TRAINING
WentWest prepares registered doctors to sit the examination for Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and is accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
GENERAL PRACTICE SUPPORT
*Note - The General Practice Support branch does not currently invite membership, therefore the GP and practice numbers listed above are an approximation only.
The General Practice Support Branch provides practical support, advice and professional development opportunities for general practitioners and practice staff working in a general practice in Auburn, Blacktown, Holroyd, Mt Druitt, or Parramatta. The Branch also assists in developing links between local general practice and other health providers in the area.
The population covered by the Branch is approximately 600,000, with over one person in five born in a non-English speaking country and resident in Australia for five years or more. That proportion is higher than for Sydney as a whole. There are approximately 480 GPs working in approximately 220 general practices. Additionally there are 52 residential aged care facilities (nursing homes and hostels), eight hospitals and six Community Health Centres.
As well as receiving significant funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing including through the Access to Allied Psychological Services Program WentWest currently holds contracts with the National Prescribing Service Limited and the Pharmacy Guild. WentWest General Practice Support is advised and supported by a Consultative Committee elected from local GPs, practice staff, the Area Health Service, local Councils and the community.
