The Southcity GP Services (Southcity) is an independent membership organisation helping GPs in the inner south-east suburbs of Melbourne to improve their skills, work together and, within the wider health care system, improve health outcomes. The Southcity's mission is to support General Practitioners in their role and practice and to assist them to improve individual and community health in the inner south-east of Melbourne. Southcity does this through excellence in targeted health activities, communications and education and training. The Division believes that "Above all, our aim is to serve our GPs."
Southcity commenced operations in August 1993 as the Inner South East Melbourne Division of General Practice. Initially, the Division had one staff member developing projects, writing newsletters, organising Continuing Medical Education (CME), liaising and doing all the things that keep an organisation going. From these humble beginnings, the Division has matured and is now a respected organisation within the region. The Division adopted the trading name of Southcity GP Services in 2000. Southcity now has a team of professional staff dedicated to enhancing and assisting GPs and General Practice. Over the ten years of its existence the Division has sought and gained funding for a wide range of successful projects to directly benefit local GPs and the community. These projects range from antibiotic resistance to clinical attachments to information technology for GPs. As a result, the active involvement of GPs in the Division has grown, as has its membership.
