The Melbourne Division of General Practice, through its members who provide primary and continuing wholepatient care, is committed to improving the health of individuals living, working or studying in, or visiting, greater Melbourne. The Division is a Federally-funded, independently governed body. The Division provides education and integration, as well as professional and personal supports to doctors in greater Melbourne.
The GPs in the area are responsible for more than half a million residents, workers, students and visitors. The area services 3 200 hospital beds from the following hospitals/networks: Inner and Eastern Health Care Network, Western Hospital Network, North-Eastern Hospital Network, Women's and Children's Health Care Network and St Vincent's Hospital.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
The major achievement of the Division was to bring GPs out of the isolation of the surgery and to start to think collaboratively about the wider issues of population health, professional standards and personal fulfillment. The multitude of MDGP programs has achieved this by promoting best practice, community involvement and advocating for collaborative approaches.
CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE
- To encourage GPs using information technology to enhance their practices and the care of their patients by improving recall systems.
- For GPs to continue to strive towards improving their best practice initiatives by encouraging accreditation and evidence-based medicine with other health providers.
