The Alliance of NSW Divisions Limited is the NSW State Based Organisation. All 37 NSW Divisions are members.

Stakeholders include RDN, State and Commonwealth Health departments, Australian Divisions of General Practice, other SBOs, community and consumer groups.

The aim of the Alliance is to support and enhance the work of NSW Divisions of General Practice. The Alliance ensures that the voice of General Practice in NSW is heard, to enhance the planning and implementation of health services at a state and national level. With all the constituents - the NSW Divisions and their General Practitioners (GPs) - the Alliance is building a cohesive network of relationships with organisations involved in improving the health and wellbeing of the people of NSW.

This network helps raise the profile of the Divisions and GPs among health planners, allied health professionals, consumers, the community, and other stakeholders.

As well as individual programs, the Alliance also assists Divisions and the Divisions Program with public relations, education and training, and other general support.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Rural and urban chapters have been established so GP issues relevant to each group can be discussed in a supportive forum.
  • The Alliance has established networks for support and resources in priority areas. These include Divisions Executive Network (DEN), IM/IT, Immunisation, Primary Mental Health, and corporate governance networks.
  • The Alliance has produced a comprehensive Corporate Governance guide.
  • The Alliance assisted in the development of a Divisions of General Practice (NSW) Enterprise Award in consultation with Divisions.
  • The Alliance has become known for facilitating representation of general practice, providing a mechanism for consultation with government and other organisations regarding Divisions and general practice, and allowing Divisions to provide input into Commonwealth and State Health policy development implementation.
  • The Alliance provides regular (around 20 to date), highly successful, relevant, targeted and educationally sound workshops for Divisions and GPs in program areas, skills development, and information sharing.

CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE

  • Successful implementation of Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) education package.
  • Expanded advice about corporate governance and financial matters including GST.
  • Monitoring implementation of Health Council report and providing input into implementation groups.
  • Commonwealth budget initiatives, facilitating discussion and provide forums for discussion on issues affecting Divisions and general practice, e.g. changing role for GPs, should Divisions become Divisions of Primary Care.
  • Sustainability of Divisions program.
  • Corporatisation of General Practice.
