CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

The Mental Health Program

The Mental Health Program is currently almost fully funded from core funding and, with a budget of $118 000, this  takes a significant proportion of funds.  Alternative funding is being sought. The Mental Health Program has been expanded to include such services as:

  • GP clinical attachments program with Acute Crisis Intervention Service and Child Adolescent Mental Health  Service medical staff,
  • case  conferences using the new MBS enhanced primary care numbers, extensive evaluation of Divisional mental health strategies assessing patient and GP satisfaction and changes  in health outcomes, and the  submission of a GP Innovations funding proposal to employ a full-time Aboriginal Liaison Worker.

Public Health Program

The Public Health program includes immunisation, cervix screening and aged care/coordinated care. The Cervix  Screening project has been extended until September 2000. Activities in the Immunisation area include the involvement of two GPs in the Train the Trainer program, planned GP  peer practice visits with CME points attached, development of a clinical audit with CME points attached and  detailed data re immunisation rates in different post code areas provided to Child and Youth Health, including  several northern locations. Members of the Divisions Board and staff are involved in developing an expression of interest for an expanded  coordinated care trial - the Northern Venture.  If successful they will be involved in developing a detailed model and funding submission, and in management and implementation of the trial.

Services to Members

Services to members include an Information Management/Information Technology (IT/IM) program, Hospital Links,  Accreditation, Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) and After Hours Care.  The Division employs an IT/IM Project Officer  whose role includes facilitating training for GPs and staff in all aspects of computerisation, providing basic  assistance with IT problems and providing information about software available.

The Division has employed a  Research, Evaluation and Professional Development Officer whose role includes facilitating Continuing Medical  Education (CME) and who is the Divisions accredited provider with the RACGP.  The Officer provides evaluation  and planning support to other staff and GPs.  A high quality six-monthly CME calendar has been developed,  maintained and promoted.

A part-time Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Coordinator has been appointed to liaise, coordinate and communicate with GPs and their practice staff, key stakeholders, allied health professionals and Division staff to implement the Enhanced Care Education program.
