Current Activities
The After Hours Primary Medical Care Program is now in its second phase and continues to assist Divisions of General Practice and GPs in analysing AHPMC concerns and seeking innovative responses to related issues.
The key issues which need to be addressed as a matter of urgency in relation to AHPMC service provision include the:
- Need for clarification of responsibility for the provision of AHPMC
- Inadequate AHPMC workforce and remuneration
- Need for funding mechanisms to support high quality AHPMC
- Need for systems change supporting ongoing sustainabilty of AHPMC rather than individually funded projects
- Need for flexible service models and funding of AHPMC to recognise and address specific local issues and needs
- Limited data on current service provision, and
- Need for effective knowledge management and communication systems to enhance existing systems of care.
The Policy Officer Network has written a discussion paper on these issues which is currently in draft form and out for consultation. They will continue to work with key stakeholders, including the DoHA, in an attempt to address these issues. The paper will be made available under the Resources section of the AHPMC page upon finalisation.
