Programs and Projects

Summary of Programs & Projects
ODGP currently undertakes the following programs:

  • Community Liaison. To ensure community / consumer input and feedback is integrated into planning and review undertaken by ODGP; to ensure communities and consumers have access to information about general practice, divisions and health issues and services; and to ensure GPs have increased access to community organisations and resources.
  • CPR. Training is provided to GPs and Practice Staff by an Accredited National Heart Foundation instructor, and sessions are conducted either at
  • Practices or on-site at the Division.
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) Access. The CALD program aims to improve the accessibility and relevance of general practice to CALD communities.
  • Diabetes. To improve the quality of diabetes care in general practice and the health outcomes of people with diabetes.
  • GP Education. The main aim is to provide quality education and professional development services to GPs.
  • GP & Practice Support. The focus of this program continues to be on supporting practices to meet the requirements of the Privacy Act, Accreditation and blended payments and assisting practices in the area of corporate services. The Business Support program also assists Practice Nurses - providing up-skilling opportunities, information, resources and advice to Practice Nurses themselves as well as GPs seeking the services of a Practice Nurse.
  • Immunisation. The Immunisation program is now well established, with the goal to improve childhood immunisation rates.
  • Indigenous Health. To ensure that: indigenous communities have increased access to health information and services; practices are culturally relevant to the needs of indigenous communities; and that young indigenous people have increased knowledge, skills and resources to access GP services.
  • Information (Media & Publications). This Program has developed out of the Management arena into its own area and will facilitate the effective communication and dissemination of relevant (health) information to GPs and Practices. This will be undertaken through development of the monthly "GP News & Views", weekly fax publications and web-page promotions. A main focus of this program will be to increase the profile of Divisional initiatives, general practice and general practice issues with external bodies and the community, via articles and media releases to other press.
Mental Health. The aim of the Mental Health Program is to improve integration of general practice with mental health services in hospitals and the community.
  • Population Health. The program will continue to support the National Health Priority areas and common risk factors. The Population Health Program provides information to GPs and Practice Staff and ensures access to health education materials by the community.
  • Professional Liaison. The Professional Liaison Program actively supports the employment of GP Liaison Officers at 3 local hospitals to assist effective collaboration between GPs and the hospital system.
  • Youth. The Youth Program's highly successful initiatives - "Baby Think it Over" and "All Stressed Out" are designed to provide young people with increased knowledge, skills and resources to access GP services. The Youth program will also continue to support the training of GPs to become "youth friendly". Health talks on relevant youth issues will provide young people with an increased awareness and understanding of personal health care.
  • Aged Care GP Panels Initiative. This program is coordinated under the requirements of the Aged Care GP Panels Initiative launched in 2004.

The Division also coordinates a QUM and Research programs. For further information, please contact us!
