CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS
Shared Care Obstetrics
The Obstetric Shared Care program has been in operation with the Womens and Childrens Hospital since 1995. Each year, GPs are offered the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills through a comprehensive Continuing Medical Education (CME) program including a five-hour Sunday seminar. GPs can be accredited at two major hospitals if they comply with the education requirements.
Shared Care - Discharge Planning
The Discharge Planning Program has been in operation since 1995. The Program involves close liaison with the Internal Medicine Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. GPs can refer patients who fit appropriate criteria to the Internal Medicine Unit and the hospital facilitates improved discharge planning processes.
Eastern Diabetes Program
The program has evolved from the collaborative efforts of the Division with the Adelaide Central Community Health Service and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1995. The program now provides a strong focus on assisting GPs in their practices. Key parts include: a practice assistance package of activities incorporating the opportunity to undertake a clinical audit activity; support from the diabetes nurse educator and the GP Adviser; and clinical attachments at the Patient Assessment Clinic at the RAH.
GP Education
Comprehensive GP education has been available at the Division since its inception. Education attachments include: psychiatry, STD, dermatology, diabetes, palliative care and cardiology. A GP Stress Management Program and the GP Business Advantage Program are also offered.
Immunisation
The Immunisation program was established in February 1998. The Immunisation Sub-Committee maintains oversight of the activities. The Divisions Local Immunisation Co-ordinator provides support to GPs and practice staff. Two CME seminars are offered each year. In late 1999, the Division undertook a comprehensive mail-out to all parents of children who were not fully immunized according to ACIR records. Immunisation rates have improved from 64% in December 1997 to 82% in September 1999.
Developmental Activities
The Developmental Activities program of the Division provides the opportunity and resources to develop and trial new activities. In 1999, a Mental Health activity was developed through a mental health sub-committee. This has evolved to a full program in 2000.
Computers in Practice
The Computers in Practice program offers a comprehensive training and development program for GPs throughout the year. The Information Technology Officer provides support including visits to GP practices.
