What's New?

Better Outcomes Implementation Advisory Group

The Better Outcomes Implementation Advisory Group was formed in October 2002 to provide advice to the Department of Health and Ageing on the progress of the implementation under the Better Outcomes in mental health care initiative and strategies to ensure success.  Dr Julie Thompson, Chair of AGDP, chairs the Group.  ADGP is represented by Dr Chris McAuliffe, Primary Mental Health Adviser, with support from the National Primary Mental Health Co-ordinator.  ADGP will continued to advise Divisions of progress with the development and implementation of this initiative.

Towards a new national mental health policy and plan for Australia

The National Mental Health Strategy (1998-2003) adopted by all Health Ministers sets the broad direction for Australia's mental health policy, action and service delivery.  The 2nd National Mental Health Plan under the Strategy is being reviewed to inform the development of Australia's future mental health policy and plan 2003-2008.

ADGP is a member of the drafting group for the proposed new policy and plan along with other stakeholders.  This is the first time general practice has been directly consulted on the direction of mental health policy in Australia.  Other key inputs will include feedback from consultations being conducted by the Mental Health Council of Australia in conjunction with the National Depression Initiative, beyondblue. Consultations have included consumers, carers and professional groups, including general practice.
