IM in GP Lead Practice Case Studies
Thank you to all those Divisions and Practices who contributed to the recent collection of information to identify Lead IM Practices. This information has been used as a basis for developing a number of Lead Practice Case Studies. It is clear from the information gathered that Information Management is becoming widely used in an increasing number of areas within Practices, throughout Australia.

As a component of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing's Divisional IMIT Extension Funding Contract (1 July to 31 December 2001) the Lead Practice activity was to be undertaken through the IM/IT Support function and facilitated nationally by the IM Coordinator Identifying lead practices to act as peer education models for practices/GPs not as familiar or confident with information management.

It was difficult to choose just six lead practices, but those chosen represent a cross section of practices that demonstrate better patient, clinical and/or practice outcomes from the effective management of information, particularly through information and communications technologies.

It is hoped that the information contained in the Case Studies can be used by Divisions to assist in raising the awareness of the many benefits that can be achieved through the uptake of information management practices and commitment to continued improvement in this area. It is intended that they also allow Practices who have not yet fully embraced IM to see the relative ease at which a wide range of practice and clinical management issues can be addressed, such as:

  • Electronic data availability and exchange
e.g. online pathology/ radiology ordering and reporting; use of electronic forms (admissions, referrals, etc)
  • Patient information databases
e.g. practice registers including relevant patient and disease; recall and reminder systems
  • Electronic diagnosis and treatment support
e.g. drug-drug interaction alerts; patient medication and clinical histories
  • Practice administration and management
e.g. electronic staff rosters/pays, billing and claiming; stock ordering on-line; for GST Business Activity Statements
  • Contribution to research activity
e.g. adverse drug reporting; electronic contributions to approved cl
    inical research activities.

The Lead Practice Case Studies are downloadable in PDF format using the links below.

Thank you for your contributions to the development of these Case Studies. I would welcome any comments you may have on them or other strategies for dissemination; please feel free to contact Mark Brommeyer, ADGP IM Coordinator, in the first instance: mbrommeyer@adgp.com.au.

Dr Steve Clark, Chief Executive Officer, ADGP
