Event Description

Delivered by Professor Judith Whitworth
Director, John Curtin School of Medical Research
The Australian National University

Tuesday 4 September 2007
6pm - 7pm

'Health sector policy tends to be driven by ideology rather than evidence' (Potter & Harries 2006).

Around the world, people are trying to improve health systems by using research evidence to inform decision making, recognising it as a critical investment. In the words of Dr Hassan Mshinda, from the Ifakara Health Research Development Centre in Tanzania, 'If you are poor actually you need more evidence than if you were rich.'

Professor Whitworth will:

  1. consider some of the key health research discoveries of the 20th century;
  2. examin the role of health in economic and social development and current initiatives in research for improving health policy internationally; and
  3. look at examples of health policy informed by research and strategies for facilitate the use of research and evidence to inform policy.

This free, public event is general admission.
Seats are not reserved.
