General Practice Today

General Practice is recognised as the key to an efficient and high quality health care system for all Australians. For this reason reform will remain high on the general practice profession's agenda. The challenge is to deliver the highest possible quality of primary health care through a network of successful and sustainable general practice businesses.
Micro-economic reform is fundamental to the government's vision for general practice in the 21st century. This will impact on the role, quality, remuneration, utilisation of current technology and structure of the industry. There is a focus on Divisions of General Practice to actively facilitate change, leading to divisions playing an expanding role in GP education and training.

The Professional Development Need

For most GPs working in private practice, medicine is a business. However the fundamental elements of business such as marketing and management are not taught in medical school.
Widespread pursuit of management training is critical to the future of general practice. A formal, nationally coordinated education and training program, catering for the business needs of General Practice, is fundamental to this end.

The Response

The Australian Divisions of General Practice (ADGP), in conjunction with Glaxo Wellcome Australia, has developed the GP Business Advantage program guided by the mission:
